Men & Mice offers support to customers wishing to transition
from the BIND 8 name server to either BIND 9 or Microsoft
DNS. The scope of such a migration process depends on the
complexity of the DNS infrastructure. Single
resolving/caching or authoritative DNS servers can normally
be migrated with remote support from the Men & Mice
Professional Services team in a few hours, while larger,
more complex environments need a careful migration plan to
ensure little or no DNS service interruption.

The Men & Mice BIND 8 migration process consists of 4
phases:

Phase 1 - Review Existing BIND 8 Configuration:
During this phase, Men & Mice Professional Services will
review the existing DNS configuration and zone data for
problem areas. The review contains checks of DNS content
(domain name syntax), BIND Server configuration (ACLs, query
restrictions, logging configuration, IPv6, TSIG, chroot) and
   the DNS name resolution path.

Phase 2 - Migration Plan:
Men & Mice Professional Services will create a migration
plan for the DNS service and will discuss this plan with the
customer. The plan will contain all necessary steps to
migrate from an existing old BIND 8 installation to a new
DNS server setup. It will highlight problem areas and will
propose best practice solutions for potential issues during
   the migration.

Phase 3 - Migration:
The DNS Server will be migrated with little or no
interruption of the DNS service. This can be done either
remotely over secure network connections (Secure Shell or
Secured Remote Desktop connections) or onsite in the
   customer's datacenter(s).

Phase 4 - Training / QA (Optional):
Men & Mice offers comprehensive training for both the BIND
9 name server and also Microsoft DNS. During the training
DNS administrators will learn how to make best use of the
functions these new DNS Servers offer, how to implement best
practice security configurations and fault-tolerant setups
and how to monitor and maintain a BIND 9 or MS DNS server
installation. Men & Mice training is available around the
world. Please visit our DNS Training website (- link) for
   more information.

Instead of training it is also possible to purchase a 2
hour online Q/A session with a Men & Mice Senior Services
Consultant to discuss the new DNS server configuration and
to answer any questions that arise during operation.

The Men & Mice BIND 8 migration support is available to any
interested party and does not require a license for a Men &
Mice software product. Please contact Men & Mice Sales or
